Immigrants in the Education System
Most economically advanced societies are now receiving large immigration waves which affect them in a variety of ways. This course concerns the effects of immigration on the educational attainment of both immigrant and native adolescents. Educational attainment is an important determinant of occupational and economic attainment of both immigrants and natives and, thus, the influence of immigration on their education has far reaching consequences for the stratification for both natives and immigrants.
Two main bodies of research can be distinguished in the literature on education and immigration: the first deals with the way immigrants are integrated into the educational system in host societies. The second, much smaller body of research deals with the influence of immigrants on the educational attainments of the native population. This course seeks to expose students on both effects of immigration.
