The School includes study programs at the BA, MA and PhD levels. Likewise, the School features a number of off-budget programs for continuing education in Clinical Psychology. The School offers five separate MA programs, in each of five fields: Adult Clinical Psychology, Child Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Psychobiology. In addition, we offer a program focusing on neuroscience, in conjunction with the Cognitive Psychology and Psychobiology programs. The BA program was founded in 1961; the MA program in 1967; and the PhD program in 1978. The programs are offered at Tel Aviv University’s campus in Ramat Aviv.

 

The School's most basic objective – promoting research and training young researchers – is reflected in the study programs at all levels, culminating in the PhD program, which focuses entirely on preparing students to conduct research and develop innovative and high-impact studies. Likewise, at the MA level, all of our programs include methodological coursework, and require students to submit at least one empirically-based seminar paper and one empirical thesis. Students in all programs gain experience, with faculty input, in conducting studies; experience which serves them later in their careers, whether or not they go on to work as full-time researchers. Clinicians, for instance, learn to evaluate the efficacy of programs of intervention. Naturally, the “research-oriented” tracks (Social and Cognitive Psychology, Psychobiology) place greater emphasis on research. In these programs, a significant portion of the coursework is devoted to psychological research methods and the execution of actual studies. Within the given limits, the programs strive to refine and expand on the fields of research offered to students, by offering special tracks and joint ventures, such as the Neuroscience Track. The instruction given to MA and PhD students for the preparation of their final projects doubles as a key tool for promoting the research programs of the School's faculty, which in turn promotes the generation of knowledge in psychology.

 

Likewise, the importance of research is reflected in the BA program, as well, which features compulsory coursework in statistics and research methods, and requires students to write an empirically-based seminar paper. The knowledge gained by our BA students with regard to research is an important part of gaining a deeper understanding of the material taught in class, critical thinking skills, developing an interest in research, and establishing students’ professional identities. The experience gained by BA students with regard to research – both as subjects and as young researchers – serves to broaden their involvement in the School’s day-to-day academic activity, enables them to get to know our senior faculty personally, and furthers the actual research activity taking place at the School. This experience also serves as a benchmark for students’ willingness and ability to move on to pursue further degrees.

 

To realize our goal of training clinicians in accordance with the “Scientist-Practitioner” model, both clinically-oriented MA programs offer a combination of applied-clinical coursework, practicum programs and clinical instruction, as well as methodological coursework and research workshops leading up to the writing of an empirically-based thesis.

 

Our contribution to the community and social actions take the form of our BA-level field studies program, in which students take part once a week for one academic year as “apprentices” at institutions offering psychological services in the community. At the MA level, the practicum program is the main channel through which students interact with the community; their contribution takes the form of guided activities given at the institutions at which they are hosted.
